So now that you know that microalgal oil is high in DHA and is a much better vegetarian source of omega-3 compared to flax oil, the next question is does microalgae oil have similar health benefits as fish oil? The answer is yes, studies have shown that DHA derived from microalgal oil has the same health benefits as DHA derived from fish oil.
In one study, vegetarians that were deficient in EPA and DHA, took 1 gram of microalgae oil daily. After eight weeks, they significantly raised both their DHA and EPA levels. This is in contrast to another study that showed that ALA derived from flax oil did not significantly increase DHA or EPA levels. This is evidence that DHA derived from microalgae oil is, obviously, a better source of DHA compared to ALA derived from flax.
Microalgae Oil is Good for the Heart
Many studies have shown that fish oil has many cardiovascular benefits. This is partly because DHA inhibits lipoprotein lipase (LPL), an enzyme that hydrolyzes lipids, therefore, reduces triglyceride levels. Similarly, microalgal DHA also reduces triglyceride levels. In one study, vegetarians taking DHA-rich microalgal oil, lowered their triglyceride levels by 23% after eight weeks.
So there you have it. Microalgae oil is good for your heart and good for your overall health.
