Type 1 diabetes risk is greatly increased in mice that were given three courses of antibiotics during early life and were already genetically predisposed to the autoimmune disease. The antibiotic treatment also caused disturbances in the microbiome and changed the immune system leading to decreased numbers of specialized T cells that prevent an autoimmune response.
