Type 2 diabetes affects 9% of the global population and was once known as adult-onset diabetes but is now found in young adults and children. While this particular study was small and involved the drastic procedure of bariatric surgery, other studies have shown that weight loss through diet and exercise can also reverse type 2 diabetes. This study is interesting because it showed that specifically losing fat that had accumulated on the pancreas was key in reversing type 2 diabetes in these morbidly obese individuals.
