Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US and the leading cause of death in California. There have been other studies estimating that up to 35 % of all cancer deaths worldwide have been reported to be avoidable through adjustments to lifestyle such as physical activity and dietary habits. This does not even take into account the preventable dietary lifestyle factors. This study of included 300,000 Americans that were followed for 15 years and measured increases in BMI over that time period. While BMI is a flawed method for measuring obesity, on a population level, most Americans that experience BMI increases are not doing so because they have been working hard to gain muscle (those individuals are the exception).
