Supplementation with fish oil during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy resulted in an increase in lean mass, bone mass, and fat mass without causing obesity in children 1-6 yrs suggesting a general growth stimulating effect (randomized controlled trial).

This was a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 700 mother-child pairs. The treatment group was given 2.4 g of fish oil (55% eicosapentaenoic acid and 37% docosahexaenoic acid in triacylglycerol form or lookalike control supplementation capsules of olive oil. The supplementation was continued until one week after birth, and the trial was unblinded when the youngest child reached age 3 years.
