The study found that that mice that were fasted for 24 hours were less responsive to inflammatory pain compared to mice that did not fast. In addition to increasing many genes that are anti-inflammatory, the fasting also increased the production of a neurotransmitter, called NPY, which selectively blocks inflammatory pain responses.
