The glymphatic system is a series of vessels that surround the brain and use cerebral spinal fluid to push out toxic waste products that build up in the brain. It also promotes distribution of several compounds, including glucose, lipids, amino acids, growth factors, and neuromodulators in the brain. The glymphatic system functions during sleep and is one reason why the biological need for sleep is so important.
