Numerous studies have shown that exercise increases the production of a neurotrophic factor in the brain called BDNF and serotonin. There are variations in both the genes that encode for BDNF and the serotonin transporter that predispose individuals to depression due to lower production. Exercise may help correct for some of the deficit in either of these since in boosts the production of both.
