Ciprofloxacin and other antibiotics that are known as fluoroquinolones may be associated with tendon rupture, tendonitis, and retinal detachment. Patients who received them had a higher risk for aneurysms than patients who did not receive the antibiotics.

Earlier this month the FDA added another update about the use of fluoroquinolone antibiotics to include mental health issues. The mental health side effects to be included in the labeling across all the fluoroquinolones are disturbances in attention, disorientation, agitation, nervousness, memory impairment and delirium.

The previous FDA update warning was about potentially permanent side effects involving tendons, muscles, joints, nerves and the central nervous system.

The FDA stated: “Because the risk of these serious side effects generally outweighs the benefits for patients with acute bacterial sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis and uncomplicated urinary tract infections fluoroquinolones should be reserved for use in patients with these conditions who have no alternative treatment options.”

Rhonda, I just subscribed and agreed to give your site 15 dollars a month because I think you derve it. But I speak for millions of people, mostly your age, and athletic, healthy individuals, more men, whose lives have literally been destroyed by Fluoroquinolones. Mentioning what the Black Box warnings are is simply not enough information..there are over 200 side effects and this has a huge community that is waiting for people like you to help. IT IS NOTY RARE. I am on one FB page that has almost 11,000 people in it and growing. Please try to adress this in the manner that you have addressed other issues. Thank you. BTW, although I am a paying member, I could not get onto the site that would allow me to contact you more efficiently.!!

This requires much more attention than this. Fluoroquinolones absolutely affect tendons, but the actually destroy mitochondria throughout the entire body and have killed hundreds of thousands of people and left millions disabled. I hope you can do a podcast on this and get this info out there. If not, who?

Good to see that some solid decisions emerging from research of these antibiotics. My father had problems with his Achilles tendon after taking Cipro about 30 years ago. Another friend of mine has permanent prostate issues from Cipro which he took in 2006.

I have been attempting to find any information on FoundFitness site regarding Fluoroquinolone Toxicity…a really under reported, and under investigated MAJOR DISEASE that effcts millions of people, including myself. Other than the closed FB groups, of which I belong, it is disheartening to find little biomedical research and information in general in the medical field that would increase and expedite help for those of us who have, and the many millions walking around who do not know they have this.
