      The vitamin A activates the enzyme (called TET) that removes methyl groups from DNA and vitamin C is a cofactor for the enzyme. 
This not only has relevance for reprogramming adult cells into stem cells, it is also important for certain cancers such as acute promyelocytic leukemia, which abnormal methylation plays a role in malignancy.
