Every other day fasting primarily alters the gut microbiota composition to promote the generation of acetate and lactate and this increased mitochondrial density in adipose tissue. The higher mitochondrial density in white adipose tissue caused the “browning” of the fat which results in increased energy expenditure through non-shivering thermogenesis.
