Micronutrient deficiencies contribute to insulin resistance, a key driver of type 2 diabetes, but researchers still don't fully understand their role in the disease's progression. A recent study found that nearly half of people with type 2 diabetes suffer from multiple micronutrient deficiencies, with vitamin D being the most prevalent.
Researchers analyzed data from studies investigating links between micronutrient deficiencies and type 2 diabetes. Their analysis included 132 studies and more than 52,000 participants.
They found that 45% of people with type 2 diabetes had multiple micronutri...

[Story] Low levels of vitamin D were associated with lower brain volumes and an increased risk of dementia and stroke, genetic analyses suggest causal effect

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with the development of dementia.
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays critical roles in many physiological processes, such as blood pressure regulation, immune function, and cell growth. Poor vitamin D status is implicated in the pathogenesis of many acute and chronic diseases, including rickets, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and COVID-19 (https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.08.20058578v4). Evidence from a recent study suggests that vitamin D deficiency is associated with the development of dementia.

These increases were attenuated in runners ingesting 1500 mg but not 500 mg vitamin C supplements for 1 week prior to the race and on race day.

      From the article:
> Vitamin C metabolism is changed in many conditions that involve physiological stress, such as infections, surgery, traumas, and burns, in which case vitamin C levels can decline dramatically. Although 0.1 grams per day of vitamin C can maintain a normal plasma level in healthy persons, much higher doses, up to 4 grams per day, are needed for critically ill patients to increase their plasma vitamin C levels to the range of normal healthy people. Therefore, high vitamin C doses may be needed to compensate for the increased metabolism in critically ill patients.

Higher blood levels of vitamin D were associated with a 2.9-fold increase in cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max). Each 10nmol/L increase in vitamin D in the blood was associated with a 0.78 mL/kg/min increase in VO2 max.
This was an observational study so it is impossible to say whether vitamin D improves exercise capacity but the association was strong and increased in a dose-dependent manner. It is interesting to think about it from an evolutionary perspective since humans used to perform most physical activity outside in the sunshine.

A study of 766 otherwise healthy adolescents showed that those who consumed the least vitamin K1-- found in spinach, cabbage, iceberg lettuce and olive oil -- were at 3.3 times greater risk for an unhealthy enlargement of the major pumping chamber of their heart, according to the study. Vitamin K1, or phylloquinone, is the predominant form of vitamin K in the U.S. diet.

The difference in cancer rates between groups did not reach statistical significance. However, blood levels of vitamin D were significantly lower (32 ng/ml) in women who developed cancer compared to women that did not get cancer and had higher vitamin D levels (42 ng/ml).
The average vitamin D level in the women's blood at the beginning of the study (33 ng/ml) was higher than the usual target levels that currently range from 20-30 ng/ml. This suggests that higher vitamin D levels than are currently recommended may be needed to decrease the risk of cancer.

High-dose intravenous vitamin C has previously been shown to selectively kill cancer cells by increasing hydrogen peroxide and now it has been found to potently kill cancer stem cells.
The new study screened a variety of compounds in order to find those that were most potent at killing cancer stem cells, which are the most resistant to any type of cancer treatment. Interestingly, vitamin C was found to be 10 times more potent at killing cancer stem cells (cultured in a dish) than 2-deoxyglucose, a drug that prevents cancer cells from using glucose via glycolysis. While this study was done in a...
