Butyrate (from the Ancient Greek word for "butter") is a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) that occurs naturally in butter and other foods and is also produced by microbes in the gut. Microbial production of short-chain fatty acids, including acetate and propionate, occurs in the colon during the fermentation of indigestible fibers found in plant foods such as legumes, fruits, nuts, cereals, and whole grains. In the gut, butyrate is the preferred fuel source for colonocytes, the skin-like cells that line the colon.[ref pmid='21978911']

Introduction
Lactobacillus reuteri is a bacterium found in the digestive tracts of mammals, including humans, and in fermented foods. It is a member of the genus Lactobacillus, which comprises most of the bacteria that live on and in the human body. Lactic acid-producing bacteria, such as those in the Lactobacillus genus, are commonly used in probiotic supplements.[ref doi ='10.1016/j.tim.2021.01.003'] Furthermore, some online resources provide step-by-step instructions for at-home bulk production of yogurt with L. reuteri enrichment. Carotenoids are orange/yellow pigments in various foods, such as carrots, pumpkins, avocados, and salmon. While carotenoids are a highly diverse group of organic pigments, with over 1,100 known carotenoids [ref doi='10.1093/database/bax004'], this overview will focus on lutein and zeaxanthin, which are of particular interest due to their notable roles in eye and brain health.
Carotenoids are one of the most common classes of bioactive compounds found in plants, along with alkaloids (e.g., berberine), organosulfur compounds (e.g., sulforaphane), and polyphenols (e.g., anth...

Introduction
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is stored in the liver and fatty tissues of the body. Perhaps best known for its role in maintaining calcium balance and bone health, vitamin D is critical in many physiological processes, such as blood pressure regulation, immune function, and cell growth. Poor vitamin D status is implicated in the pathogenesis of many acute and chronic diseases, including rickets, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, and cancer.
Vitamin D is a controversial topic in the scientific community and has contributed to much debate regarding t...

Obesity is associated with two times increased cancer risk and extreme obesity is associated with a 14 year reduction in lifespan. Magnesium is required for enzymes that repair DNA damage, a precursor to cancer and the aging process in general. In this video I gave a keynote lecture at the orthomolecular medicine congress in Bussum, Netherlands and discussed my data showing that obese individuals have more than twice the amount of DNA damage in their peripheral blood cells compared to lean individuals. I also talk in detail about my recent research on how vitamin D and the omega-3 fatty acids ...
