[Story] Sulforaphane lowered markers linked to tumor growth in men with prostate cancer.

Sulforaphane, a compound generated from precursors found in cruciferous vegetables, has attracted interest for its potential effects on cancer biology. Researchers tested whether a supplement designed to generate sulforaphane in the body could alter tumor-related markers in men with prostate cancer.
The double-blind study randomly assigned 41 men with prostate cancer awaiting surgery to remove the prostate to receive either a daily placebo or a broccoli-derived supplement containing 240 mg of glucoraphanin plus myrosinase for four weeks. Together, these ingredients generate sulforaphane after ...

Psychedelic drugs are drawing renewed interest as possible tools for mental health treatment, but researchers still do not fully understand how they affect the brain. To tackle that question, scientists combined brain-scan data from several countries and analyzed them together to see whether different drugs produce similar changes in the brain.
The researchers carried out a mega-analysis, meaning they pooled individual brain-scan data from multiple earlier studies and reanalyzed them together. They focused on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, or resting-state fMRI, which tr...

Childhood obesity is a growing concern with multiple contributing factors, and perhaps, exposure to artificial light at night is among the most important. To investigate this, researchers in China followed more than 218,000 schoolchildren over a 15-year period.
Each year, the students underwent health examinations that included body mass index measurements. At the same time, satellite data provided yearly measurements of how bright the outdoor night sky was in the area around each school. Children were then grouped based on long-term trends over the study period: areas that stayed consistently...

Speaking another language may help the brain resist aging and disease, staving off Alzheimer’s disease by as much as five years. A new study shows that bilingualism offers protection by enhancing the brain's resilience against the cognitive decline linked to the disease.
The study included 364 older adults, ranging from healthy people to those with subjective cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, or Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers assessed the thickness and volume of participants' brain regions associated with language and Alzheimer’s progression.
They found that while bilingualism di...

Reaction time and mood were improved in young individuals that consumed blackcurrant berry drink with 500 mg of polyphenols compared to placebo in a small pilot randomized controlled trial. EEG data also showed the blackcurrant drink changed brainwave activity.
This was a small trial with a crossover study design, which means each person serves as their own control. Both the blackcurrant drink and the placebo drink had 6.98 g of sugar (glucose +fructose). They also both had the same amount of vitamin C...the only difference was that the placebo drink lacked the 500 mg of polyphenols.
