Lead exposure during pregnancy can harm a child’s developing brain, increasing the risk of autism-related behaviors. Some evidence suggests that folate, a B vitamin, might help protect against lead's neurotoxic effects. A recent study found that higher folate levels during pregnancy may help reduce the risk of autism-like behaviors in children exposed to lead before birth.
Researchers analyzed data from a large mother-infant cohort study that tracked participants from pregnancy through early childhood. They measured blood lead levels and plasma folate concentrations during the women's first an...

Mild cognitive impairment is often a precursor to Alzheimer's disease, marking the initial stages of cognitive decline that precede more severe dementia. Evidence suggests lifestyle factors mediate the progression of mild cognitive impairment. A recent study found that intensive lifestyle modification improves cognitive and functional performance and slows disease progression in older adults with mild cognitive impairment.
Researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial involving 49 participants aged 45-90 with mild cognitive impairment or early dementia due to Alzheimer's disease. Half of...

Depression and anxiety are neuropsychiatric diseases characterized by neurological dysfunction and poor mental health. Oxidative stress, which is caused by an imbalance in the concentration of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant compounds, may be one driver of neurological damage in the development of depression and anxiety. Findings of a new report demonstrate the ability of methyl donor supplementation to reduce oxidative stress in the brain and relieve depression and anxiety symptoms in rats eating a high-sugar diet.
Methyl donors (e.g., choline, betaine, folate, vitamin B12) are nutrie...

A new meta-analysis found no link between saturated fat consumption and heart disease but did find that a Mediterranean diet (41% fat) supplemented with at least 4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil or a handful of nuts lowered the risk of cardiovascular events by 30% compared to a low-fat (37% fat) diet.
A Mediterranean diet consists of extra virgin olive oil, vegetables, oily fish, and nuts which contain polyphenols, vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids which are known to attenuate inflammation and thought to prevent coronary thrombosis.
