Rich Roll describes his younger self as an overweight, overworked lawyer who was depressed and unenthusiastic about life. One evening after work, he experienced chest pain while going up some stairs and thought he was having a heart attack. This episode produced a moment of clarity and a sense of urgency to change his diet. Gradually, over the next six months, he transitioned, first to a vegan diet with lots of processed foods and then to a completely plant-based whole foods diet.
