Sleep restriction can impair insulin sensitivity, especially when it is severe or repeated. In this clip from Dr. Rhonda Patrick's appearance on Huberman Lab, she explains how exercise may support glucose handling when sleep is imperfect. A meta-analysis of randomized sleep-restriction trials found an overall reduction in insulin sensitivity, while the response varied across protocols and participants. [1]
A small randomized crossover study tested whether sprint intervals could help after one night with only four hours of sleep. Nineteen healthy young men completed four all-out 30-second cycling sprints. The workout improved a late insulin-response measure, showing that acute exercise can influence part of the metabolic response to severe short-term sleep restriction. [2]
Physical activity remains valuable when ideal sleep is not possible. In a cohort of more than 282,000 adults, higher activity was associated with a more favorable mortality pattern across sleep-duration groups. Exercise intensity should still match alertness and recovery. Easy or moderate movement may be appropriate after a mildly short night, while severe sleepiness is a reason to reduce training demands and prioritize rest. [3] [4]

Dr. Andrew Huberman: If someone sleeps one or two hours less than usual for one night, can exercise offset some of the effects? If a person must choose between more sleep and exercise, what should they do?
Dr. Rhonda Patrick: Sleep restriction can impair insulin sensitivity, especially when it is severe or repeated. The effect is not guaranteed after every single mildly short night.
Exercise improves glucose uptake and insulin sensitivity. In one small crossover study, 19 healthy young men completed four all-out 30-second cycling sprints after a four-hour night. The session improved one late insulin-response measure, but it did not lower total glucose exposure or fully normalize insulin sensitivity.
Exercise does not reliably cancel inflammation from one short night. Experimental meta-analyses do not consistently find higher systemic inflammatory markers after one night. Repeated severe restriction can increase selected markers.
My postpartum continuous-glucose-monitor experience was a personal observation. CGM patterns alone do not diagnose prediabetes. Sleep, recovery, hormones, diet, sensor error, lactation, and renewed activity could all have affected the readings.
There is no universal rule to choose exercise over sleep. After a mildly short night, safe easy or moderate movement can support mood and glucose handling. After an all-nighter, severe sleepiness, illness, dizziness, or poor coordination, prioritize recovery and avoid risky driving, sprints, maximal lifts, or technical sport.
Habitual short and very long sleep are associated with higher mortality in many cohorts. These studies are observational. Long sleep often reflects illness, frailty, depression, sleep disorders, or low activity.
In one large self-report cohort, physically active short sleepers did not have a statistically higher mortality rate than active recommended-duration sleepers. This does not prove equal risk or show that exercise neutralized sleep loss. It shows that physical activity remains beneficial when sleep is imperfect.
Adult activity guidance calls for 150 to 300 minutes per week of moderate activity, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity, or an equivalent combination, plus strength work on at least two days. It does not require both full aerobic totals.
Recovery is part of training. Persistent fatigue, declining performance, pain, mood change, recurrent illness, and loss of enjoyment can mean that load or recovery needs adjustment. Taking a lighter or rest day can support long-term health.
