[Story] A prebiotic fiber altered pain sensitivity and reduced knee pain in osteoarthritis patients.
Knee osteoarthritis pain is often only treated as a problem of joint degeneration, but growing evidence suggests the gut may also play a role in how that pain is perceived. Researchers tested whether inulin, a prebiotic fiber, could reduce symptoms on its own or when paired with a digital physiotherapy program. The trial randomly assigned 136 adults with knee osteoarthritis to four groups: 20 grams of inulin per day, an app-based physiotherapy exercise program, both treatments together, or maltodextrin as a placebo. The researchers measured average knee pain, lower-body function using chair-s... arthritis gut microbiome prebiotics

Watch now[Story] Our gut microbiomes aren’t getting enough fibre, but supplements can help
Prebiotic supplements can compensate for low fiber intake. Dietary fiber refers to the indigestible components of plant-based foods. A growing body of evidence indicates that eating a fiber-rich diet decreases the risks of many chronic diseases, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension (https://www.bmj.com/content/347/bmj.f6879.full), diabetes (https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10654-013-9876-x), and some types of cancer, including breast cancer (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0923753419387320) and colon cancer (https://www.bmj.com/content/343/bmj.d6... gut microbiome fiber supplements

Dietary fiber improves symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of medical conditions that includes high blood pressure, high blood glucose, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and excess abdominal fat. Having metabolic syndrome increases a person's risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. A 2009 study found that supplemental psyllium and guar gum improved symptoms associated with metabolic syndrome. Psyllium, found in husks of the psyllium (Plantago ovata) seed, and guar gum, found in guar beans and commonly used as a food additive, are types of soluble dietary fi... nutrition diet cholesterol blood pressure

[toc position='left'] Introduction Lactobacillus reuteri is a bacterium found in the digestive tracts of mammals, including humans, and in fermented foods. It is a member of the genus Lactobacillus, which comprises most of the bacteria that live on and in the human body. Lactic acid-producing bacteria, such as those in the Lactobacillus genus, are commonly used in probiotic supplements.[ref doi='10.1016/j.tim.2021.01.003'] Furthermore, some online resources provide step-by-step instructions for at-home bulk production of yogurt with L. reuteri enrichment. Watch now[Story] Supplemental probiotics for 12 weeks improved cognition in Alzheimer's patients & also lowered inflammatory markers.
The probiotics also lowered triglycerides, VLDL, and markers of insulin resistance. There was no cognitive improvement in the placebo group. The participants took 2 billion Bifidobacterium bacteria per day, which is a pretty small quantity of probiotics. It is likely that the probiotics are working through multiple mechanisms such as lowering inflammation and increasing neurotransmitters. Other studies have shown that gut bacteria are able to modulate the levels of GABA, norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine, and acetylcholine through the gut-brain axis. I spoke with the gut experts, Drs. Justin... brain alzheimer's gut microbiome inflammation probiotics behavior insulin triglycerides dopamine norepinephrine acetylcholine
