An after-work exercise session may not erase the metabolic effects of spending the rest of the workday seated. Researchers tested whether alternating between sitting and standing could improve metabolic responses to a meal the following day.

Sixteen adults who worked desk jobs and sat more than nine hours a day tested three work patterns in their normal work environment. For two workdays, each participant either remained seated throughout the workday, followed the same sitting schedule plus a 60-minute moderate cycling workout on the second evening, or completed the workout while alternating 30 minutes of sitting with 30 minutes of standing during work. The next morning, they drank identical liquid meals at breakfast and lunch while blood samples tracked glucose, triglycerides, and insulin for six hours.

  • Participants needed less insulin to manage the meals when standing breaks were added to the evening workout.
  • Glucose and triglycerides did not clearly differ across conditions.
  • Exercise alone did not improve the glucose or insulin response. The added standing breaks were the feature that separated the active conditions.

After a meal, insulin signals muscle and other tissues to take excessive glucose out of the blood. When insulin levels are lower despite similar glucose levels, it suggests that tissues are responding more efficiently to insulin's signal. Prolonged sitting leaves the large leg muscles at very low activity for long blocks. Standing raises energy use and repeatedly engages postural muscles, even though it is much less active than walking. Those repeated interruptions may keep muscles more responsive to insulin throughout the day, and potentially even into the next, in a way that one short moderate-intensity exercise session cannot reproduce. However, without a standing-only condition, the study cannot tell whether the exercise session still contributed to the benefit or by how much.
