Sleep was shown to improve the ability of some immune cells to attach to their targets and may be one reason why sleep is important for immune function.
T cells were taken from healthy volunteers while they slept or stayed awake all night. T cells taken from sleeping volunteers showed significantly higher levels of integrin activation and were able to bind to targets compared to T cells taken from wakeful subjects.
