Food-contact exposures depend on the material, additives, temperature, contact time, condition, and food. In this clip from Dr. Rhonda Patrick's appearance on The Diary Of A CEO, she audits common kitchen products and offers practical ways to reduce unnecessary plastic contact. A systematic review found that temperature, fat, acidity, contact time, and material composition can affect the migration of bisphenols and phthalates, supporting the use of glass or stainless steel for hot, oily, or acidic foods when practical. Black plastic deserves product-specific attention. A U.S. survey detected brominated and organophosphate flame retardants in some black household products and identified recycled electronics as one plausible source. Replacing worn black plastic cooking utensils with wood or stainless steel is a simple precaution. Bottled-water results can also depend on packaging details. One French survey found more measured microplastic particles in sampled glass-bottled water than in plastic bottles or cartons, with painted caps identified as a likely source. [2] [3]
Other useful steps focus on condition, handling, and maintenance. Replace cracked, melted, sticky, or badly worn utensils. Avoid overheating empty nonstick cookware. Choose electronic receipts or wash hands before eating after repeated receipt handling. A small experiment found higher BPA absorption when sanitizer was used before receipt handling and food was then eaten by hand. For drinking water, check the local water report and select a properly maintained filter certified for the specific contaminant of concern. [4] [5]

Steven Bartlett: We have several takeout containers and kitchen products here. Which changes matter most?
Dr. Rhonda Patrick: Some black plastic kitchenware has tested positive for flame retardants associated with recycled electronic waste. The finding does not apply to every black plastic product, and the best-known U.S. exposure estimate was corrected downward by a factor of ten. Replacing worn black plastic cooking utensils with wood or stainless steel is a reasonable precaution.
Not every plastic contains BPA or phthalates. Migration depends on the polymer, additives, temperature, contact time, condition, and food. Heat, oil or fat, acidity, and abrasion can increase migration from some materials. Spiciness itself is not the mechanism.
For hot, oily, or acidic food, glass or stainless steel can lower uncertainty when practical. Do not identify a paper coating as PFAS by sight or touch. It might be wax, polyethylene, a biopolymer, silicone, or another barrier.
Steven Bartlett: What about bottled water? One study found more microplastics in glass bottles.
Dr. Rhonda Patrick: One small French survey found more detectable 30-to-500-micrometer particles in glass-bottled water than in plastic-bottled water. Painted caps were a likely source. The result covered a narrow set of products and did not measure nanoplastics, BPA, or phthalates. It does not establish that glass water is generally worse or better across brands and countries.
Smaller particles may be more able to cross biological barriers, but human absorption, dose-response, tissue distribution, and clinical effects remain uncertain. Detecting microplastics does not by itself prove harm from a specific container.
Steven Bartlett: Should acidic condiments and fatty foods be kept away from plastic?
Dr. Rhonda Patrick: Glass is a reasonable option for long-stored acidic condiments. Fat can increase migration of some lipophilic additives. But flexibility or appearance cannot identify the chemicals in an unlabeled cheese wrapper or container.
Steven Bartlett: What about utensils, pans, and blenders?
Dr. Rhonda Patrick: Wood, stainless steel, and reputable food-contact silicone are practical options. Silicone can contain fillers and processing residues, but that does not mean it is secretly plastic. Replace cracked, sticky, melted, or badly degraded utensils.
Stainless steel and cast iron avoid fluoropolymer coatings. Intact PTFE nonstick cookware used at normal temperatures has low measured migration. Do not preheat it empty at high temperature, ventilate the kitchen, and replace a badly scratched, peeling, or damaged coating. PFOA used during older manufacturing is different from finished PTFE.
Abrasion can release particles from plastic. A glass or stainless-steel blender jar can reduce direct plastic contact, but ordinary blender shedding depends on the design, condition, temperature, and contents. No matched human study shows that switching jars improves health.
Steven Bartlett: Should people avoid thermal-paper receipts?
Dr. Rhonda Patrick: Thermal paper has used BPA, BPS, and other color developers. Exposure varies by paper and is more relevant for workers who handle receipts throughout the day. Choosing an electronic receipt, washing hands before eating, and avoiding sanitizer or lotion immediately before repeated receipt handling are reasonable steps.
A small experiment found that sanitizer used before receipt handling increased BPA absorption, but it did not establish a universal hundredfold rise from any lotion. Observational data linking urinary BPA with lower testosterone in adolescent boys do not show that touching a receipt cuts testosterone in half.
Steven Bartlett: What should people know about water filters?
Dr. Rhonda Patrick: Filter performance depends on the device, maintenance, and contaminant. A plastic housing does not prove that a pitcher filter creates a net increase in plastic exposure. Reverse-osmosis systems can reduce many dissolved contaminants and particles, but no device removes every chemical.
Check the local water report or test a private well. Choose a filter certified for the exact contaminant of concern, replace cartridges on schedule, and maintain the system. Reverse osmosis removes some minerals, but food supplies most essential nutrients. It does not create an automatic need for a multivitamin or trace-element drops. Supplement only for a documented dietary or medical need.
