The allergy-prone children lacked anti-inflammatory polyunsaturated fatty acids and breast milk–derived oligosaccharides which caused an increase in inflammatory-producing immune cells and a decrease in immune cells that prevent autoimmune responses. Future studies will try and identify the exact causes of such disruptions in the infant microbiome including breastfeeding and mode of delivery.
