In addition, more serious dysfunction in brain glucose utilization was associated with the manifestation of disease symptoms like memory issues during life.

This study also found that glucose transporters in neurons were also low in Alzheimer’s patients which could explain why glucose is not being used well in neurons.

This data does seem to suggest that alternative sources of fuel for the brain such as ketone bodies (which can be used as energy by neurons) may play a role in slowing down disease severity (ie. plaques and tangles) and may also slow memory decline…but we need more evidence before this conclusion can definitely be made.
