The first clinical trial to show that stem cells extracted from a patient’s baby teeth can be transplanted into an injured permanent tooth where it helps root development, the regrowth of dentin, and increased blood flow.
These stem cells reside in the dental pulp of the tooth and are referred to as dental pulp stem cells. Dental pulp stem cells are also found in adult teeth although to a much lesser degree. Dental pulp stem cells have been shown in animal studies to differentiate into other cells types including connective tissue and neurons in the spinal cord.
