Added sugars increase cardiovascular disease risk factors among U.S. children at levels below the current consumption rate.

Children in the U.S. consume ~95g of added sugar daily, almost 4 times what the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends.

The WHO guideline does not refer to the sugars in fresh fruits and vegetables since there is no reported evidence of adverse effects of consuming these sugars when they are complexed in a food matrix.

The National Growth and Health Study has also found that diets high in added sugars result in the displacement of micronutrients including low intakes of vitamins A, D, and E, calcium, and potassium.
