Obesity-induced blood-brain barrier dysfunction: phenotypes and mechanisms
jneuroinflammation.biomedcentral.com
The blood-brain barrier is a complex set of membranes that allows nutrients and cell signals from the bloodstream to enter the brain while excluding harmful substances. Obesity alters the blood-brain barrier’s integrity, eliciting a cascade of adverse effects that influence many aspects of human health. This review describes the mechanisms that drive obesity-induced blood-brain barrier degradation and its effects.
