Cereal beta-glucan and psyllium are soluble fibers that can support LDL cholesterol reduction. In this public preview from Q&A #81, Dr. Rhonda Patrick explains why she is considering beta-glucan as a lower-volume alternative to psyllium. In a randomized trial of adults with borderline-high LDL, one gram of high-molecular-weight oat beta-glucan taken three times daily reduced LDL by about 6 percent after four weeks. Larger analyses also support approximately three grams per day of sufficiently viscous oat beta-glucan for modest LDL lowering. [1] [2]
Psyllium has a separate and well-established evidence base. A meta-analysis of eight trials found that about 10 grams per day reduced LDL by approximately 7 percent after eight weeks, while a later analysis also found reductions in non-HDL cholesterol and apoB. These results make both fibers useful options. The effective dose depends on the specific fiber, while viscosity, molecular weight, processing, baseline LDL, and consistent use can influence the response. [3] [4] [5]
Dr. Patrick also discusses exploratory research on beta-glucan and PFAS. In a secondary analysis of 72 men, the combined concentration of six PFAS declined by about 8 percent within the oat beta-glucan group over four weeks, while the study did not distinguish the magnitude of change from the control group. She plans to take one gram of barley beta-glucan three times daily, matching the cholesterol trial schedule. Barley contains gluten, and concentrated fiber is best introduced with adequate fluid and attention to digestive tolerance and medicine timing. [6]

The first question was submitted by Tom. He asks why I am considering switching from psyllium husk to beta-glucan powder and why I do not take both.
Soluble fiber can lower LDL cholesterol. For cereal beta-glucan, the evidence-backed target is about three grams per day. Beta-glucan is a fermentable soluble fiber found in oats and barley. Psyllium also lowers LDL, but studies often use approximately seven to ten grams per day. These are separate evidence bases, not a direct proof that beta-glucan is twice as effective.
One randomized controlled trial used one gram of high-molecular-weight oat beta-glucan three times daily for four weeks in adults with borderline-high LDL. LDL fell by about six percent. The reported eight-percent cardiovascular-risk reduction was a modeled Framingham estimate based on lipid changes, not a measured reduction in cardiovascular events.
A meta-analysis of psyllium trials used about ten grams per day for eight weeks and found approximately four-percent lower total cholesterol and seven-percent lower LDL. I prefer the lower volume of beta-glucan, but no head-to-head trial establishes that it is superior to psyllium.
My second reason involves PFAS, often called forever chemicals. Their persistence varies by compound. Some long-chain PFAS remain in the body for years. Urine and fecal or biliary pathways can both contribute to clearance, depending on the compound. Ongoing exposure also affects measured blood levels.
PFAS can enter food through contaminated water, soil, processing, or packaging. Organic certification can reduce exposure to some pesticides, but it does not guarantee that food is PFAS-free. Associations between PFAS and bone outcomes in children are observational and do not prove causation.
Animal studies suggested that beta-glucan might reduce enterohepatic reabsorption of some PFAS. A 2025 exploratory human analysis then measured stored serum from an earlier cholesterol trial. It included 72 men who received three grams per day of oat beta-glucan or rice powder for four weeks.
The six-PFAS sum decreased by about eight percent within the beta-glucan group. Individual PFOA and PFOS changes were not statistically significant. Total PFAS also fell in the control group, and the magnitude of change did not differ significantly between groups. The study measured serum concentrations, not fecal excretion. It therefore provides a preliminary signal, not proof that beta-glucan removes PFAS.
The next question asks whether I found a beta-glucan product. I wanted a product with clear beta-glucan content and contaminant testing. I selected a Canadian barley beta-glucan product called Cerabeta and disclosed that I have no affiliation with the company.
Current manufacturer materials say the product is not certified organic. Claims about glyphosate, pesticides, heavy metals, and mycotoxins require current lot-specific documentation. Health Canada, FDA, and EFSA recognize qualifying oat or barley beta-glucan cholesterol claims under defined conditions. They do not approve this brand or a PFAS-removal claim. The frequently cited 13 studies refer to a broader barley beta-glucan evidence review, not necessarily 13 trials of Cerabeta.
My planned dose is one gram of beta-glucan three times daily, for three grams per day. This split schedule matches the oat cholesterol trial. It does not prove that spacing doses by three hours is uniquely necessary for LDL lowering or PFAS clearance. Barley contains gluten, and concentrated fiber can cause gastrointestinal symptoms or affect medicine absorption.
