Aliquot #27: Health consequences of sleep deprivation, part I: Metabolic & immune health
Poor sleep reduces the body's insulin sensitivity and changes a person's appetite, increasing the preference for high carbohydrate foods like pizza, pasta, and sweets. Lack of sleep also alters the gut microbiota and impairs immunity, putting us at risk for developing acute illnesses like colds and flu. Eventually, chronic poor sleep increases our risk for much more serious threats, such as cancer, unless we take steps to sleep better. This episode of the Aliquot feature Drs. Matthew Walker, David Sinclair, and Rhonda Patrick (in a members' Q&A).
