Aliquot #69: Benefits of high-intensity interval training
High-intensity interval training, or HIIT for short, is a popular form of exercise involving short bursts of intense aerobic exercise interspersed with periods of lower-intensity exercise or rest. During an average HIIT session, a person typically achieves 80 to 100 percent of their maximum heart rate. Most HIIT workouts are brief, lasting just 15 to 30 minutes. The benefits of HIIT include improvements in muscle tissue oxidative capacity, enhanced insulin response, improvements in heart function, and increased lactate – an important source of fuel for the heart, brain, and muscles.
