Aliquot #71: Eating for aging – and the protein debate
Protein is an essential component of a healthy eating pattern because it supports the growth, development, and maintenance of skeletal muscle tissue. Having sufficient muscle mass markedly reduces a person's risk of dying prematurely. Although some studies suggest that eating less protein promotes longevity, those studies might not take into account the periods of disuse and disability that often occur in real life. Eating more protein and exercising may be essential for staving off the effects of aging.
