With amino acid diet, mice improve after brain injury

Jul 26, 2022

“Findings from a 2009 study suggest that a branched chain amino acid-rich supplement ameliorates TBI-associated cognitive dysfunction. The branched chain amino acids, which include leucine, isoleucine, and valine, play important roles in muscle protein synthesis.”

Fish oil omega-3 normalizes BDNF levels in the hippocampus and improves cognitive function in animal model of traumatic brain injury

Jul 8, 2020

“Mitigation of oxidative stress as a mechanism of increased BDNF: > It has been shown that TBI can result in cumulative ROS, which may be associated with reduction of BDNF. Thus, DHA may help to counteract elevated levels of ROS with subsequent effects on the action of BDNF on synaptic plasticity and cognition after TBI.”

People with severe brain trauma were 2.4 times more likely to have a favorable recovery if given progesterone & vitamin D.

Oct 7, 2026

“Progesterone alone was 1.8 times more effective than placebo but vitamin D and progesterone had the greatest impact on recovery. Considering that up to 70% of the US population has inadequate vitamin D levels, this could pose an unfavorable outcome for many TBI patients. Doses given: progesterone (1mg/kg body weight twice a day). vitamin D (5micrograms/kg body weight once per day).”

Traumatic brain injuries reactivate dormant herpes simplex virus, causing inflammation and accumulation of harmful proteins in the brain, a process potentially linked to Alzheimer's disease.

Jan 22, 2025

“Each year, millions of people sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI), often resulting in serious, long-term consequences. Research indicates that even one head injury is linked to a higher risk of developing dementia, with the risk increasing further after two or more.”
