“A large study performed at multiple medical settings in seven cities around the country found that surgical masks were as good as N95 respirators in protecting healthcare workers from influenza and other viral respiratory illnesses.”

“Multiple studies have shown that critical brain regions increase in activity when people perform difficult tasks, whether the effort is physical or mental. Brain atrophy in these brain regions can be prevented through vigorous exercise and bouts of strenuous mental effort.”

“Participants who experienced four mild concussions had difficulty with processing speed and working memory – an aspect of cognitive function that allows a person to remember information for relevant tasks.”

“Participants completed 12 weeks of combined aerobic and resistance training in the morning (8 a.m. to 10 a.m.) or afternoon (3 p.m. to 6 p.m.). The researchers measured insulin tolerance, body composition, and exercise performance before and after the intervention.”

“Although this study did not assess the teens' athletic performance, it's important to note that protein supports muscle growth and maintenance, ultimately influencing aspects of performance. Learn more about the importance of dietary protein in this episode featuring Dr. Philip Stuart.”

“FTA: > The organismal performance assay detects subtle toxic effects by subjecting mice to a relentless, Darwinian competition for food, shelter and mates. If there is a defect in any physiological system, it is more likely to stand out if test animals have to compete for resources, scientists say.”

“Researchers analyzed data from randomized controlled trials comparing resistance exercise to other interventions, including no treatment, other forms of exercise, non-exercise interventions, or a combination of these.”

“FTA: > "People with more 'positive' variables, such as more education, better physical endurance and above-average performance on memory tests, shared the same patterns. Their brains seemed to be more strongly connected than those of people with 'negative' traits such as smoking, aggressive behaviour or a family history of alcohol abuse."”

“FTA: > By injecting MSCs into mouse leg muscles prior to several bouts of eccentric exercise (similar to the lengthening contractions performed during resistance training in humans that result in mild muscle damage), researchers were able to increase the rate of repair and enhance the growth and strength of those muscles in the exercising mice.”

“FTA: > Engineers have developed a surgical robot designed to perform brain surgery by entering through the cheek instead of the skull that can operate on a patient in an MRI scanner. Additionally, the engineers have designed the system so that much of it can be made using 3-D printing in order to keep the price low.”
