Resistance exercise in older adults boosts levels of cardiotrophin-like cytokine factor 1—a myokine released during exercise—by nearly 70%, improving muscle strength, bone density, and metabolic functions.

Jul 11, 2025

“Then they restored cardiotrophin-like cytokine factor 1 levels in older mice and found that muscle strength, glucose tolerance, and mitochondrial activity improved. Bone density also increased as the myokine reduced bone-resorbing cells and boosted bone-forming cells.”

Moderate intensity exercise releases a lipid-controlling hormone (called lipokine) that causes skeletal muscle to take up fatty acids.

May 31, 2018

“Moderate intensity exercise releases a lipid-controlling hormone (called lipokine) that causes skeletal muscle to take up fatty acids (in both mice and humans). The release of the lipokine also correlated with an increased capacity for mitochondrial energy production in humans and improved VO2max. It also seems to decrease circulating triglycerides.”
