“It interfered with the ability of neurons to communicate with each other, rewire connections after injury, record memories and produce enough energy to fuel basic functions (in mice).”

“Amyloid-beta forms plaques in the brain and disrupts the synapses between neurons which can play a role in memory loss. Amyloid-beta aggregates are associated with Alzheimer's disease.”

“The study involved 581 cognitively healthy older men living in China. Researchers assessed the men's cognitive function and measured their levels of testosterone and neurofilament light chain, a structural protein that maintains neuronal health and connectivity.”

“There are a couple of mechanisms by which acetaminophen has been speculated to alter fetal brain development including acting on cannabinoid receptors, which help determine how neurons mature and connect with one another, altering the immune system, or by increasing oxidative stress.”

“As we age, choline levels increase in the brain and this is linked to cognitive impairment and loss of brain function. Aerobic exercise appears to stop choline levels from increasing too much and boosts brain power by increasing markers of neuronal energy reserve.”

“Cholinergic neurons are vital for cognition and perception. They release acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that facilitates impulse firing between neurons. Cholinergic neurons are particularly vulnerable to amyloid-beta's toxic effects, which impair acetylcholine release.”

“Findings from a recent study suggest that exercise maintains synapses in the brains of older adults. Synapses are junctions between neighboring neurons, where the exchange of electrical signals and neuronal communication occurs.”

“A memory has been transferred from one marine snail to another by injecting RNA from one to another. The RNA is thought to induce epigenetic changes in the nucleus of neurons, thereby storing the memory. This research may have implications for restoring memories in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease.”

“The disease is caused by a single genetic mutation, called a CAG repeat, that drives abnormal protein folding and aggregation of the huntingtin protein and subsequent death of striatal neurons.”
