Senescence

Jul 6, 2026

“Although some of the hypoxia-associated effects of hyperbaric treatments, such as sirtuin activation, stem cell proliferation, mitochondrial biogenesis, and neurogenesis, are associated with longevity, the effects of hyperbaric therapy on cellular senescence are unknown.”

“In muscles, IGF-1 supports repair and growth by increasing receptor density and sensitivity. In the brain, IGF-1 promotes neurogenesis, particularly in memory-critical areas like the hippocampus. Exercise also binds IGF-1 to protective proteins, reducing its availability to precancerous cells.”

“Poor cerebral blood flow is commonly observed in mice and humans and may contribute to impaired amyloid-beta clearance, thereby accelerating the progression of Alzheimer's disease. In addition, heat exposure increases the production of BDNF to promote neurogenesis – the growth of new neurons in the brain (as described above).”

Aug 25, 2026

“Zinc and the brain Zinc exerts a diverse range of effects in the brain throughout a person’s lifespan. During development, zinc is required for the function of numerous enzymes and proteins that are necessary for neurogenesis.”

A good reason to add some aerobic exercise to your resistance training: it may grow new neurons in the brain better.

Feb 8, 2016

“Adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus was significantly increased by aerobic exercise while resistance training had no effect on neurogenesis but did improve strength in rats. Since both cognitive decline and frailty (decrease in strength) occur with age it may be good to engage in both aerobic and strength training.”
