Taking prescription pain meds, like ibuprofen and naproxen, on a regular basis may increase risk of heart failure.

Sep 29, 2016

“Previously, the FDA warned that NSAIDs increase heart attack and stroke risk even with short-term use. NSAIDs disrupt mitochondrial function in heart cells and also endothelial nitric oxide production in blood vessels & may partly explain why chronic use increases the risk of heart attack.”

Moderate intensity exercise releases a lipid-controlling hormone (called lipokine) that causes skeletal muscle to take up fatty acids.

May 31, 2018

“Moderate intensity exercise releases a lipid-controlling hormone (called lipokine) that causes skeletal muscle to take up fatty acids (in both mice and humans). The release of the lipokine also correlated with an increased capacity for mitochondrial energy production in humans and improved VO2max. It also seems to decrease circulating triglycerides.”

Supplementation with pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) improved cognitive function and blood flow to the brain in humans.

Sep 29, 2017

“PQQ is present in a variety of foods such as parsley, green tea, and fermented soybeans. PQQ is also abundant in human breast milk. The estimated daily intake of PQQ from typical foods and beverages are 0.01–0.4 mg/day. PQQ is an anti-oxidant and promotes mitochondrial biogenesis. Reduced PQQ exhibits a high anti-oxidant capacity that is 7.5-fold greater than that of ascorbic acid.”

Could Alzheimer's disease be a maladaptation of an evolutionary survival pathway mediated by intracerebral fructose and uric acid metabolism?

Dec 29, 2023

“Here’s an interesting report that didn't make it into this issue of the Digest. Fructose metabolism is a survival mechanism that drives nutritional intake, reduces resting metabolism, promotes fat and glycogen storage, and induces insulin resistance to preserve the brain's glucose supply.”
