What is really in your sunscreen and personal-care products—and how much should you worry?
Most of us spend more time examining food labels than the labels on products we put on our skin and hair. Yet sunscreen, moisturizers, makeup, fragrance, and shampoo may be used day after day, sometimes over much of the body.
Sunscreen creates a particular dilemma: it protects against ultraviolet (UV) radiation, but its active ingredients have also prompted questions about hormone disruption and long-term safety.
Those questions rarely have a simple "safe" or "toxic" answer. While a newly approved UV filter may address some drawbacks of older sunscreens, the wider cosmetics and personal-care products market includes thousands of ingredients with very different levels of safety evidence. Understanding what is known and where questions remain can help consumers make more informed product choices without losing sight of the importance of sun protection and skin care.
