Does heat exposure accelerate biological aging?
Extreme ambient heat can feel miserable and even pose acute health risks, but could long-term exposure also speed up biological aging? A recent study explored exactly that.
Epigenetic evidence links sustained ambient heat to faster aging
Researchers analyzed blood samples from roughly 3,700 older adults across the United States.[1] To pinpoint biological age, they utilized DNA methylation clocks, which are tools measuring chemical markers (DNA methylation) that predictably change as we age. These markers reveal a person's "epigenetic age", widely accepted as an indicator of biological aging independent of chronological age.
