Folic Acid vs folate: Same vitamin, different biology?
Folic acid is often treated as interchangeable with folate, but biology tells a more nuanced story. How your body handles them depends on enzymes, genetics, and even dose. Understanding that difference can help you choose what actually supports your health best.
Vitamin B9: An essential nutrient with multiple biological forms
Folic acid and folate are forms of vitamin B9, a water-soluble B vitamin which plays an important role in DNA synthesis and cell division. In adults, insufficient vitamin B9 levels disrupt the production of new cells, particularly red blood cells, and can lead to megaloblastic anemia, a condition marked by enlarged, poorly functioning blood cells and reduced oxygen delivery. Low vitamin B9 status has also been associated with elevated homocysteine levels, which are linked to cardiovascular risk, as well as neurological, cognitive, and mood-related symptoms.[1] [2]
