The Optimal Creatine Protocol for Strength, Brain, and Longevity | Darren Candow, PhD

Mar 31, 2025

“While typical muscle-oriented creatine supplementation protocols (3–5 grams daily) can benefit bone indirectly through increased muscle mass, emerging evidence suggests that higher doses (up to ~8–10 grams/day) might be optimal for maximizing creatine's potential bone benefits in aging populations, especially when paired with weight-bearing exercise.”

The combination of curcumin and ursolic acid (from apple peels) shrank prostate tumors in mice by inhibiting the tumor from metabolizing glutamine.

Jun 6, 2017

“The combination of ursolic acid and resveratrol (from grape skin) also shrank the prostate tumors in mice. Many different tumor types rely on glutamine as a carbon source for energy and as a nitrogen source for building more DNA and proteins (macromolecular synthesis). Additionally, these compounds also activated pathways involved in cell death.”

Fasting activated a pathway in the brain that inhibits the perception of and response to chronic pain in a study done in mice.

Apr 2, 2018

“The study found that that mice that were fasted for 24 hours were less responsive to inflammatory pain compared to mice that did not fast. In addition to increasing many genes that are anti-inflammatory, the fasting also increased the production of a neurotransmitter, called NPY, which selectively blocks inflammatory pain responses.”

Commensal bacteria in human intestine, Bifidobacterium dentium, capable of producing large amounts of GABA, a major inhibitory neurotransmitter.

Jul 4, 2016

“Also interesting and from the article... > In addition to its pain modulating properties, GABA may also be capable of inhibiting inflammation. Recent studies have shown that immune cells called macrophages also possess GABA receptors. When these receptors were activated on the macrophages there was a decrease in the production of compounds responsible for inflammation.”
