How to Interpret Research on Acetaminophen During Pregnancy
“Dr. Rhonda Patrick reviews research on prenatal acetaminophen use and neurodevelopmental outcomes while clearly distinguishing association from causation. In 996 mother-infant pairs, higher cord-plasma acetaminophen biomarker levels were associated with higher odds of later autism or ADHD diagnoses.”
Acetaminophen use during pregnancy may harm offspring.
“There are very few alternative medications for reducing pain and fever, so acetaminophen use in pregnancy may be difficult to eliminate. The authors conducted a systematic review of studies conducted over a 25-year period involving acetaminophen use during pregnancy.”
Alcohol
“Acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol), can lead to increased liver toxicity when consumed alongside alcohol. It's probably safe to take these medications the day after consuming alcohol to ease hangover symptoms once the alcohol has left your body.”
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may reduce the placenta’s ability to regulate hormone levels.
“"A 2015 study found evidence that prenatal exposure to acetaminophen may reduce the ability of the male fetus to produce testosterone. Testosterone production was reduced in human fetal testicular tissue that had been transplanted into castrated mice given acetaminophen for a week."”
Children whose mothers used acetaminophen during pregnancy were more likely to have ADHD symptoms or hyperkinetic disorder at age 7
“The investigators noted longer prenatal exposure strengthened the associations between acetaminophen use and neurodevelopmental disorders. These findings suggest that acetaminophen use during pregnancy influences fetal brain development, potentially increasing the risk of ADHD or hyperkinetic disorders.”
Mothers who frequently took acetaminophen (Tylenol) while pregnant were ~six times more likely to have a girl with language delays.
“The CDC estimates that 65% of pregnant women in the United States use acetaminophen while pregnant. While this study does not establish causality...this association seems to warrant future investigations on the effects of frequent use of acetaminophen during pregnancy.”
Girls on average enter puberty between one-and-a-half and three months earlier, if mother took acetaminophen for >= 12 weeks during pregnancy
“The study involved nearly 16,000 children (and their mothers) enrolled in the Puberty Cohort of the Danish National Birth Cohort. The mothers provided information about their acetaminophen use during pregnancy via phone interviews conducted during and after pregnancy.”
Tylenol (acetaminophen), recently shown to reduce social anxiety, now found to blunt positive emotions as well.
“FTA: > Researchers studying the commonly used pain reliever acetaminophen found it has a previously unknown side effect: It blunts positive emotions.”
Prenatal exposure to acetaminophen (Tylenol) increased autism spectrum & hyperactivity symptoms in children by 30%.
“There are a couple of mechanisms by which acetaminophen has been speculated to alter fetal brain development including acting on cannabinoid receptors, which help determine how neurons mature and connect with one another, altering the immune system, or by increasing oxidative stress.”
