Mild and undetected infections, previously believed to have no effect on lifespan, proven to be telomere shortener.

May 10, 2016

“FTA: > Mild infections without symptoms of illness can still lead to serious consequences by reducing the lifespan of the infected individuals, research shows. A new study has been carried out on malaria-infected migratory birds. The infection is thought to speed up the aging process by shortening the telomeres (i.e., the chromosomes ends) at a faster rate and thereby accelerating senescence.”

Aliquot #56: Aging gracefully with exercise

Apr 26, 2022

“Exercise is a huge driver of how well we age because it induces profound molecular shifts that support immune health and might even protect our telomeres – indicators of aging. Exercise might help forestall certain age-related diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, too.”

Coal plant emissions may be damaging infant DNA. Babies born during a coal plant’s operation in China had shorter telomeres.

Apr 22, 2018

“Babies born during a coal plant’s operation in China had shorter telomeres than those born after the plant’s closure. Earlier studies found that a pollutant in coal plant emissions called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), was able to damage DNA in infants but that this occurred at lower levels in the cohort of babies born after the plant had shut down, indicating less exposure.”

Hyperbaric oxygen trial discovered a lengthening of up to 38% of the telomeres, decrease of up to 37% in senescent cells in certain cell populations

Mar 11, 2022

“Following all 60 treatments, telomere length increased by 30 percent in T-helper cells, 38 percent in B cells, and 22 percent in natural killer cells. Demonstrating further benefit, hyperbaric treatment reduced the number of senescent T-helper cells by 12 percent and cytotoxic T cells by 11 percent after 60 sessions.”
