“Smaller crossover studies support the same practical direction. Sprint intervals improved the late insulin response after one four-hour night of sleep, and a two-week HIIT program attenuated the rise in glucose, insulin, and free fatty acids after 24 hours without sleep.”

“The result shows how movement and weight-related behavior can change the course of prediabetes. Dr. Patrick also explains how regular aerobic and vigorous exercise improves insulin sensitivity, glucose disposal, vascular function, and blood pressure.”

“As a starting point, Dr. Attia suggests people consume just enough protein to maintain and grow muscle mass. The oral glucose tolerance test, which monitors glucose and insulin levels, can be used to determine carbohydrate limits.”

“When a person does not get enough sleep, their pancreatic beta cells become less sensitive to glucose signaling, reducing the amount of insulin produced by the pancreas. This, in turn, impairs glucose uptake, resulting in hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes.”

“The small male sample and short experimental period limit broader conclusions. A separate study in 11 healthy men found that prior HIIT attenuated increases in glucose, insulin, and free fatty acids after 24 hours without sleep.”

“The typical Western diet, characterized by high intakes of processed foods, refined sugars, and saturated fats, raises blood glucose and insulin levels, promotes inflammation, and contributes to the phenomenon of "leaky gut" syndrome.”

“Insulin-like growth factor-1, or IGF-1, is a hormone that plays key roles in growth and is the key mediator of growth hormone activity. It is produced primarily in the liver, and its synthesis and release are promoted by dietary intake of protein, especially those containing the amino acids methionine and cysteine.”

“A four-week pilot study in people with type 2 diabetes reported improved insulin-stimulated glucose disposal after oral alpha-lipoic acid, while a three-week randomized trial found that intravenous 600 milligrams per day reduced diabetic neuropathy symptoms.”

“Identifying the mechanisms that drive these correlations is an area of active research. Decreased carbohydrate intake results in reduced insulin signaling, and reductions in protein intake leads to decreased mTOR activation, two major aging pathways.”

“Refined sugar, however, is a highly processed product derived from sugar cane or sugar beets. Typically found as sucrose – the combination of glucose and fructose – the body metabolizes refined sugar rapidly, causing insulin and blood sugar levels to skyrocket.”
