“In this clip, Drs. Levine and Patrick discuss definitions of aging used in science and why biological aging matters to scientists. Dr. Levine shares the hallmarks of aging that help researchers determine someone's biological age, what drives accelerated aging, and what epigenetic modifications such as CpG methylation say about the aging process.”

“However, a growing body of evidence suggests that pre-pregnancy health of both parents shapes the health of their offspring through epigenetic mechanisms, which are influenced by nutrition, stress, and other environmental factors.”

“An often-overlooked area of human reproduction is the effect of a father's health on their offspring. A growing body of evidence suggests that paternal obesity, in particular, can have far-reaching effects across generations through epigenetic changes passed via sperm DNA.”

“Butyrate acts as an inhibitor of histone deacetylases (HDACs), which are epigenetic regulators linked to aging. Researchers have determined that beta-hydroxybutyrate is an endogenous regulator of HDACs and is able to regulate age-related genes such as FOXO3.”

“In addition, the epigenetic clock assesses changes in DNA methylation that are predictive of age. In this clip, Dr. Eric Verdin describes the emerging field of biomarkers of aging and the diverse strategies, including artificial intellegence, that are being employed.”

“This is her precautionary practice recommendation, not a trial-proven universal threshold. Animal studies suggest paternal alcohol exposure can alter offspring development and epigenetic marks. These findings do not establish the same effects in humans.”

“Diet, lifestyle, and environmental exposures can drive epigenetic changes throughout a person's lifespan to influence health and disease. Epigenetic age is based on a person's DNA methylation profile and strongly correlates with their chronological age.”

“Instead, they suggest that any effects they may have were not clearly captured by this specific epigenetic-age measure and dataset. One limitation of the study is that it was observational, so it cannot prove that any supplement lowered biological age.”

“Another study has shown that obesity epigenetically alters 500 different genes in human sperm DNA including genes involved in cognition. Likewise, several animal studies have shown that maternal obesity epigenetically changes genes involved in brain function.”

“01:52:55 - Environmental enrichment creates epigenetic changes that benefit learning and memory in rodents and these benefits transfer to offspring. Study. 02:05:00 - NASA study showed that gravity influenced expression of genes involved in metastasis.”
